AutoNation: Back in the fast lane with expansion, higher sales




















Despite an agonizingly slow economic recovery, the country’s largest auto retailer, Fort Lauderdale-based AutoNation, is thriving again as demand for vehicles expands.

The company, one of Florida’s largest, is posting increasingly strong profits and revenues. Just last week, in a sign of confidence, Autonation announced a major acquisition — buying six large auto stores in Texas — that will add about 700 employees to its national payroll of 19,400.

In announcing the deal Tuesday, which is expected to provide AutoNation with $575 million in additional revenues next year, the company’s CEO and chairman, Mike Jackson, expressed optimism about the prospects for continued growth in vehicle sales.





“You want to know what I’m thinking, look at what I do,” Jackson told viewers on CNBC’s Squawk Box program.

No information was released on the cost of the transactions, but in recent years auto dealerships sometimes sold for three to five times revenue, which would represent a significant investment for the company.

Tough times

To be sure, AutoNation has struggled through some tough times. It was battered by the Great Recession, which depressed sales and pushed the company into a $1.2 billion loss four years ago. As sales began to improve in 2010 and 2011, it was blindsided by a shortage of Japanese-made cars last year after the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 shut down Japanese manufacturers of some essential components.

Since then, however, AutoNation has rebounded. Unit sales, revenues and profits all performed well in the first three quarters of this year, and the company expects new vehicle sales to continue their recovery nationwide, rising to the mid-14 million units this year, up from about 12.7 million in 2011. In the third quarter of 2012, AutoNation’s new car unit sales grew by 21 percent over the same period in 2011, doing better than an estimated 15 percent increase industry wide. November’s sales of new vehicles increased by 21 percent over November 2011 .

The big dealerships acquired sell Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen and Chrysler products in the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth markets. They are expected to sell 14,000 new and used autos this year, and will add substantially to AutoNation’s future sales.

“We are in the right industry at the right time,” Jackson said during an interview. “The recovery in new vehicle sales is being driven by replacement demand,” added Jackson, who has 42 years of experience in the auto business. “The average age of the light vehicle fleet in the country has increased to 11 years, and even though cars and trucks last longer today, they can’t go on forever. About 12 to 13 million vehicles are scrapped every year and need to be replaced.”

Other factors are contributing to stronger demand for vehicles. “The population is growing, interest rates are low, there is ample credit available and manufacturers are producing a wide range of new models that offer attractive styling, power and greatly improved gas mileage,” said Jackson, who took over as AutoNation’s CEO in 1999. “Auto financing is more available than it has been in recent years. A little known fact is that people are more likely to default on a mortgage than on a vehicle loan.”

‘$hocKing!’








New York’s senators yesterday laced into the feds for withholding aid for ailing and injured Sept. 11 first responders.

“It’s shocking that the Victim’s Compensation Fund hasn’t been paid out yet. We’ve worked too hard. I don’t care how complicated it is — it’s been two years since the bill was signed. It’s outrageous!” Sen. Chuck Schumer fumed in response to an article in yesterday’s Post (pictured).

Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand sent a letter to Sheila Birnbaum, special master of the fund, demanding the money be allocated by Christmas.

Birnbaum blamed the holdup on incomplete forms submitted by ailing first responders.




She said she hopes to begin making payouts in January.

Congress allocated $2.7 billion to the fund, which was to dole out $875 million in the first five years, beginning in 2011, and the rest in 2016.

So far, not a dime has been granted.

“On September 11, an urgent call went out, and New York City’s police officers responded quickly and decisively and did their job,” said PBA boss Pat Lynch.

“Why the fund can’t do the same is mind-boggling. People are sick and dying while they wait for help.”

U-Haul chase suspect appears in Miami-Dade court on Sunday




















The suspect arrested in connection with Friday’s chase through the streets of Miami-Dade in a rental U-Haul truck appeared in front of judge Sunday morning.

Darrell Conyers, 45, made his first appearance in bond court.

Conyers faces a number of charges including grand theft, fraud and resisting arrest with violence.





During the hearing, the judge noted that the only charge before her was driving with a suspended license. For that she set bond at $2,000. Conyers will return to bond court at a later time for the additional charges.

Conyers was scheduled to appear in court on Saturday but was unable to do so because he was still in the hospital being treated for injuries he sustained at the end of the chase which apparently started as an attempted robbery at a tool shop on South Dixie Highway.

For 45-minutes the U-Haul truck weaved in and out of city streets, jumping on and off the Palmetto Expressway and headed in different directions along Southwest Eighth Street and Flagler Street.

The chase finally came to an end 12:45 p.m. next to Miami Senior High in Little Havana on Flagler Street and 26th Avenue.

When officers moved in to apprehend the driver, an unidentified Miami-Dade Police officer was injured when he was pinned between the U-Haul truck and a police vehicle. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.

Another Miami officer cut his hand from broken glass. Police say that happened when officers had to break the glass on the U-Haul truck to get the suspect out of it.

Police said Conyers has had previous run-ins with the law and has convictions for firearm violations, fleeing police and carjacking.

RIM offers biggest clients incentives to adopt BB10






TORONTO (Reuters) – Research In Motion Ltd on Thursday outlined a program of incentives to encourage its biggest customers to run its soon-to-launch line of BlackBerry 10 devices, seeking to persuade corporations and government users to stick with its secure smartphones.


RIM is betting that the devices, to be launched on January 30, will revive its fortunes. That will depend to a large extent on the response from RIM’s enterprise customers — the business users who value BlackBerry’s strong security features.






Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM, once a smartphone pioneer, has bled market share to Apple Inc’s iPhone and devices powered by Google’s market-leading Android operating system, even among the business customers who once used BlackBerry exclusively.


RIM says its new devices will be faster and smoother than previous BlackBerry phones and will have a large catalog of apps, which are crucial to the success of any new line of smartphones.


It now plans to phase in a BlackBerry 10 Ready Program for enterprise customers, initially offering online training and webcasts, and then providing free trade-ups of licenses and services.


“We will be aggressively reaching out to our customers to make sure they are aware of this program,” said Bryan Lee, senior director of enterprise at RIM. “We see this as really the linchpin for helping our customers to transition to BB10.”


Early adoption of BlackBerry 10 by government and corporate clients will go a long way in easing the concerns of both RIM’s clients and investors. Many fear that a lackluster market reception to BB10 could seal RIM’s fate.


RIM, which does not say what percentage of its business comes from the enterprise customers, said its online training and webcast series are already in place. Trade-ups, including free upgrades on the licenses for BB10 operating system, will be available ahead of the January 30 launch.


Evercore Partners analyst Mark McKechnie said RIM’s step-by-step program to woo enterprise customers was a positive move, though it highlights the challenges RIM faces.


“We are encouraged with an ‘all out’ marketing campaign with the right incentives to motivate enterprises to upgrade,” he said in a note to clients. “Our take is that this will remove a roadblock for those already planning to upgrade, but likely won’t push too many who prefer to wait.”


McKechnie, who has an “equal-weight” rating on RIM’s stock, said the move is unlikely to tempt back customers who have already abandoned the BlackBerry in favor of iPhones and Android devices. RIM offers support for the rival devices, but needs corporates to update to Blackberry Enterprise Service 10 so they can power and run BB10 devices on their networks.


BB10 READY


RIM’s Lee said he sees tremendous excitement from enterprise customers who want to use the new platform, but he would not speculate on how many would be ready to transition to the new platform come launch day.


RIM said last month that its BlackBerry Enterprise Server 10, which runs the devices on corporate networks, is in beta testing with around 20 key government agencies and corporates.


Feedback on the BB10 devices and platform has been largely positive from both carriers and developers. Financial analysts remain divided.


Some have upgraded their ratings and targets on RIM’s share price in anticipation of a successful launch of BB10, while others believe the new platform has little chance of succeeding.


TD Securities analyst Scott Penner on Wednesday raised his price target on RIM to $ 12 from $ 9.50, but said RIM still faces significant hurdles.


RIM’s stock has surged over the last two months from multi-year lows around $ 6 as the launch date for the new devices nears. The stock is still more than 90 percent below the 2008 all-time high around $ 148.


The latest TSX data indicates that short positions in RIM shares have fallen dramatically in the last two weeks. The total short positions in RIM, a bet that the stock price will fall, on the TSX fell to 15.2 million as of November 30, down from 20.6 million in the prior two weeks.


RIM shares slipped 0.4 percent to $ 11.89 on the Nasdaq on Thursday. The Toronto-listed shares ended down 0.3 percent at C$ 11.81.

Singer Jenni Rivera Feared Dead in Plane Crash

The remains of a private plane carrying singer Jenni Rivera have been found in Mexico with no survivors following a suspected crash. 

Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, Mexico's Secretary of Communications and Transportation, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that, on Sunday, officials found the remains of an airplane that was carrying the Mexican-American superstar and her entourage who were traveling from Monterrey to Toluca, Mexico.

The small jet had been carrying seven passengers (Rivera included) and lost radio contact with the airport a few minutes after departing in the early hours of the morning following a concert, reports THR.

The singer's father and brother later confirmed to Telemundo that Rivera died in the crash.

With the sad news, Latin artists all over the world took to Twitter to express their heartbreak.

Gloria Estefan mourns, "Our deepest sympathy to the family & fans of @jennirivera & those that accompanied her on what was to be her last voyage. Rest in peace."

Nurse who killed herself was tormented by Kate Middleton radio stunt: sources








The London nurse who killed herself after patching through a prank phone call from Australian DJs to the colleague caring for Kate Middleton was “traumatized” by the ordeal, it was revealed yesterday.

Jacintha Saldanha, 46, was “terribly upset,” said a hospital source. “She was traumatized by it and by the media coverage.”

She transferred the call on Wednesday from the dimwitted shock jocks — who posed as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles — to the nurse treating the pregnant Dutchess of Cambridge for morning sickness.

That nurse, who has not been identified, gave up information about Middleton’s state to the snickering jockeys.




Saldanha was slated to speak with her bosses about the prank before her bodywas found Friday in an apparent suicide, but had not been disciplined.

“The hospital was working hard to support her. But I don’t think anyone realized how traumatized she was,” the source said. “There was a plan to have a chat [with her] at some point.”

Scotland Yard wants to interviweq reached out toAussie police, who want to interview DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian over the death, which was classified as “unexplained.”

Greig and Christian were holed up yesterday as King Edward VII’s Hospital ripped into the pair in a letter to the radio station.

“The immediate consequence of these premeditated and illconsidered actions was the humiliation of two dedicated and caring nurses who were simply doing their job tending to their patients,” the letter read. “The longerterm consequence has been reported around the world and is, frankly, tragic beyond words.”

The radio station defended the suspended DJs. According to the Daily Mail, it won’t fire them. Their boss even painted them as victims.

“This is a tragic event that could not have been reasonably foreseen, and we’re deeply saddened by it,” said Rhys Holleran, the CEO of Southern Cross Austereo, which owns the station 2Day FM.

“I spoke to both presenters early this morning and it’s fair to say they’re completely shattered,” he said yesterday in Melbourne, adding that the pair had been offered counseling and that Greig could be suicidal.

“These people aren’t machines — they’re human beings. We’re all affected by this,” he said. “Everyone who knows Mel fears for her mental state. There are very real fears she could selfharm, and nobody wants that.”

Saldanha’s husband mourned her loss on Facebook. “I am devastated with the tragic loss of my beloved wife Jacintha in tragic circumstances, She will be laid to rest in Shirva, India,” he wrote.

Their 14 year old daughter, Lisha, also posted, “I miss you, I loveeee you,” on Facebook, according to the DailyMail.

Saldanha’s inlaws in Mangalore, India, said she did not talk about the pranks.

“Benedict used to call every day, but [neither] he nor Jacintha said anything about what had happened. Everything seemed normal,” said her motherinlaw, Carmine Saldanha, 69, according to Indian media.

“We got a call last night from Benedict informing us that Jacintha had died. He was crying and couldn’t speak much. We don’t knowwhether we’ll be able to bring her dead body back to India but we desperately hope so.”

Benedict’s sister said he was shattered.

“He was totally broken, sobbing uncontrollably,” said Irene, 63.

Greig and Christian are unlikely to face prosecution, but the radio station is taking a financial hit after several sponsors cut their advertising over the flap. The station is not running any commercials this weekend.

The radio station is no stranger to controversy.

Broadcast authorities investigated it after a teen girl in 2009 was hooked up to a lie detector on the air and claimed she was raped when she was 12.

In Tuesday’s prank, Greig called the hospital around 5:30 on Tuesday, posing as the Queen, and asked to speak to Middleton, whowas hospitalized with severe morning sickness.

Saldanha patched her through to the nurse, who told Greig that Middleton was resting comfortably.

Greig continued the ruse, asking Christian, whowas impersonating Prince Charles, for a ride to the hospital.

The radio station initially apologized for the prank, but continued to advertise it on its Web site as the “biggest royal hoax ever” — even after Saldanha’s death was reported.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has received “a lot” of complaints over the prank, but is not investigating, the DailyMail said.

The prestigious hospital has long hosted the royal family and the rich and famous.

Saldanha—who worked at the hospital for four years—was answering calls that night since there is no afterhours operator.

The hospital forbids employees to patch phone calls through to the ward.

State scraps plan to have private vendors make license tags




















Backing away from a possible court fight, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles announced Friday that it will halt its attempt to bid license tag services to private vendors.

Tax collectors — who distribute state tags — and two manufacturing groups tried to block the change by lobbying elected officials and filing legal action against the department.

Highway Safety Chief Julie Jones had wanted to save money by paying private companies $31.4 million over two years to make tags and distribute mail and online orders, but she abandoned the idea under pressure from Attorney General Pam Bondi and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, among others.





“We listened to what everyone had to say, considered questions that vendors posed and received information from our tax collector partners,” Jones said. “Based on the input, we have decided to withdraw [efforts to privatize].”

The decision will keep Florida out of administrative court, which is where it seemed headed Tuesday after department lawyers shut down tax collectors’ requests to retract its invitation to bidders.

Jones’ change of heart earned praise from Bondi, who said the department “did the right thing.”

Manufacturing company Avery Dennison and St. Petersburg-based PRIDE, a nonprofit organization that uses prisoners to manufacture tags, filed formal protests and met with state officials this week.

For them, the state’s decision may only be a temporary victory.

Stephen Hurm, an attorney for the state highway agency, told tax collectors Friday the department will not seek to privatize plate distribution but could reignite the push as early as January to bid out the manufacturing role.

The state may want to switch from raised tags to the more modern flat tags that are thought to be more legible for red light and toll cameras. PRIDE doesn’t have the equipment to make flat tags.

Hillsborough County Tax Collector Doug Belden says he will fight the state if it moves to exclude PRIDE.

“Why change a system that is working well and that customers enjoy? My job as an elected official is to provide the most friendly, capable customer service for the best price. We’re doing that,” said Belden, who criticized Jones for excluding tax collectors in her decisions.

Belden, along with PRIDE lobbyist Wilbur Brewton, argue that flat tags are no easier to read and are more expensive — which will result in more fees for motorists. The company may try to invest in new technology if that’s what it takes to continue working with the state, Brewton said.

“Is the equipment currently sitting in the plant to do it? No,” he said. “This could cause harm, but we would have to calculate that once we see the details.”

Jones hasn’t committed to any tag — flat or raised, she said. She just wants something legible and well-priced.

“We want to get the best product moving into the future in terms of technology, but at a cost that’s affordable,” Jones said. “This is going to be done in a cost-effective manner.”

The controversy over the tags is not expected to stall a planned redesign.

Floridians can continue to vote on four designs for a new state tag at Vote4FloridaTag.com. About 50,000 people have weighed in. The deadline is Dec. 14.
